Whoa! Can you believe the first full week of school is over?! It's flown right by, and we have gotten right into learning!
Math:
Unit 1: Fractions
We are learning how to compare fractions, find equivalent fractions, and convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions. This is a tough unit for the students to jump right into for 5th grade. It would be helpful for you to check your child's homework each night. If they have questions with any problems of a lesson that has been taught, I would be more than happy to help the following day!
The students will receive a homework packet every Monday which will contain all the assignments for that week. It will be due the following Monday. Next Monday, Sept. 15th-Packets are due! =)
Reading
We have been learning strategies to power up our reading this week. The students are challenged this year to read 40 books! We discussed that to become better at something, we need to keep track of it! The students were each given a reading log to monitor their reading in school and at home. This will help us become better readers.
Remember to have your child read 30 minutes every night and to sign their assignment notebook that they they did this!
Writing:
In writing, we have been generating ideas for our memoirs! Next week, we are going to look at all of our different memories and find a theme throughout them. A memoir is narrative with a theme! =)
Science:
We are researching the planets to find out how amazing our solar system! The students will practice their listening and speaking skills when they present these next week. During this unit, we will also be learning about how objects in the solar system move in patterns, and why we have seasons!
Spelling:
Week took our first spelling test today! Week 2 words are posted on the spelling lists tab on the blog.
*We had our first payday today for classroom economy! They were very excited to receive their paychecks. Some of the students are realizing how fast their money disappears when they are fined for off task behavior and talking out of turn.
The students are learning the importance of making good choices with their money through this program!
