5th grade holiday party fun!

Thank you so much to all the parents to make this party so memorable for the students! I'm so blessed to be teaching these wonderful students and in such an amazing school.

And just like that we are into the month of December. Below are some of the dates to mark down on your calendar for the month of December. We have a very busy couple of weeks with lots of exciting things planned.

Christmas Ornament Sale!!

It's that time of year again!!
Our Bauer Elementary Leadership Team is proud to introduce our 2014 ornament sale. This year the money raised will be donated to the Caring Kids program at the Helen Devos Children's hospital.

It costs just $2.00 to purchase one ornament, or you can buy three for $5.00, six for $10.00.

*Each ornament will have a sticker attached to it. The sticker is a homework pass for your child to use on one sheet of homework.

Ornaments are available until Dec. 12.

Art Hanging Help Needed!!!

Art Hanging Volunteers Needed

Our students have been busy learning wonderful new techniques and studying new artists during art class. They are creating fabulous artwork and we are eager to have these projects displayed. We are hoping you might consider helping with this! Our goal is to have a volunteer signed up for every Friday throughout the rest of the school year to help remove existing artwork from the hallway, and hang the new projects. We're asking you to consider even ONE Friday this year, or even one per month! This would be a tremendous help and would allow our students to really take pride in their awesome art! We have an organized system that will make this job very easy for you. Thank you for considering and for supporting our art program! Please email lmoss@hpseagles.net if you are interested.

Social Studies Posters!

Here is the following that needs to be on your explorer poster: 

WHO: Who was your explorer? Where did they come from? When did they explore? What was their route? (Picture on map)

GOAL/MOTIVATION: What was their goal? Why did they want to explore? What were they hoping to find?

OBSTACLES: What problems did they run into on their exploration?

ACHIEVEMENTS: How did it go? Did they achieve their goal?

I can't believe Thanksgiving will be here before we know it! It was so nice to meet with all of you at conferences. I am so blessed to be a part of a school with such wonderful parents and students.

Here are some things that we have been doing the past couple of weeks:

Reading:
We have been focusing on characters while reading. Students are asked to keep notes on the characters in their books. We are analyzing characters and seeing if our theories about them are changing throughout the story. We have been doing a read aloud in class called Because of Mr. Terupt to practice these skills as well. We will be finishing up our character unit next week!

Writing:
In writing we finished our first opinion essay. The students have been working on the classroom laptops to publish their essays. The students chose a character from a book or a person to write their essay on. During this unit, the students will be writing two essays. We will begin generating ideas on our second essay this week. The second essay with follow the same 5-paragraph essay structure, but will be on a topic that they feel strongly about. We will be finishing up our essay unit before Thanksgiving break!

Math:
We are finishing up unit 3 in math. Throughout this unit, the students were simplifying fractions, multiplying and dividing fractions, and also reading word problems and determining which operation should be used to solve the problems.
This is a very challenging unit for many of the students, once again, the remembering sheets are not required but strongly encouraged on the back of the homework sheets and will help solidify these skills.
Homework is due this Wednesday, Nov. 12 
Our Unit 3 Test will be this Thursday, Nov. 13

Social Studies:
In social studies the students have been learning about the different regions that the Native Americans settled in. We have been studying the different environments and natural resources that the Native Americans encountered in each region. We will begin learning about exploration this week!

*The PE Cares food drive is going on until Nov. 21

*4th/5th - Proteins and Other (tuna fish, peanut butter, baked beans, etc)

However, all food donations will be accepted, even if they don't fit into your category. 

The class that brings in the highest number of items will win a PE CARES t-shirt and a 

bowling field trip to Hudsonville Lanes!  

Thank you for your help and support in this community service project, and for taking this opportunity to teach our kids compassion and love for others!!

Oct. 29- Goodies Factory delivery of items! They should arrive around 1:15, so if you could be at Bauer by 2:00 to pick them up, that would be wonderful! That way we will have time to organize all of the items and be sure that we have all of them for you to take home with you.

Oct. 30- Halloween Party!! 2:30-3:30

Oct. 31- No School!

Nov. 3- Book Fair Preview at 10:00 am

Just a reminder the COIN WAR begins on Monday!! Remember to bring in coins to put into your favorite football teams' jars! 

Newsletter

Math: We have finished Unit 2 in Math, and we will be moving on to Unit 3: Multiplying and Dividing Fractions next week. This is a very difficult unit for students in the past. The students took their pretests yesterday. Pretests are not counted as a grade, they are to simply have the students track where they were before and then after the unit. They see so much growth at the end of the Unit! It is nice to have them be proud of themselves. Please remind your child not to get down on themselves about pretests! :) They are just for tracking purposes! They will have a new homework packet next Monday, and it will be due the following Monday.

Writing: The students finished publishing their memoirs and celebrating them with their writing partners. We celebrated with cookies!

Reading: We have started Unit 2 for Reading: Analyzing Characters in our books. Remind your child that even when they are reading at home to jot down notes about characters and how other characters treat the main character in the book. Your child should be reading 30 minutes every night, and if you would please initial their assignment notebooks, so I know that they are reading! =)

Science: This week we explored force and motion and graphed our data. The students are learning to graph data and analyze it. This is a tricky skill for many of them! :) Our science test on Force and Motion will be on Oct. 29!

Looking Ahead: 
Oct. 23- Typing Test! Be sure your child is practicing ATRT! :) They know how to log in from home!
Oct. 24: Conference forms are due! Be sure to let me know if you are going to be able to make it to conference on the time that I scheduled for you.
